FIXED CULT PRESENTS: TALKATIVE TUESDAYS !!!!

(photo cred: John Prolly)
A TEXAS SIZED INTERVIEW WITH A.J. AUSTIN

SO WHO ARE YOU AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INTO/RIDING FIXED ?
My name is Stephen F. (AJ) Austin, I've been riding fixed for 4 years and doing the tricks for 3ish

SO WHAT DREW YOU INTO THE FIXED GEAR WORLD ?
I had just moved back to Texas from Louisiana/ being on tour with friend and had no car. A friend had a conversion and he set me up with an old panasonic tourist which i rode for about 6 months with no breaks, straps, or lights while getting to work every night / day. I met Jesse Gordon, Peru and a few other guys with fixed gears and they were into doing track stands, pogos, etc. and started riding with them.
What really drew me to Fixed Gear was the fun of going on long rides, goofing around with tricks, all while having this amazing group of friends. That was probably the most fun i've had with the sport thus far
i'm sorry "hobby" not sport, not yet.

WHAT ARE YOU INTO ASIDE FROM FIXED GEARS ?
my Family, BMX- been riding alot lately its a blast! also Music is a big passion, I'm appealing to grad school to study Texas music and the interaction between East Texas and Louisiana.

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN EAST TEXAS AND LOUISIANA ?
You'd be surprised how many American music forms grew out of that area. Jazz, Blues, zydeco, Hip Hop, Screw, and the number of artist from that area is kinda amazing
jump blues, rag time, etc.
r&b, Rock, and when i say grew out of I mean like originators to the styles coming from there
you can para-phase that if you want

NO PARA-PHRASE NEEDED . . THAT'S AMAZING AND SOUNDS SUPER INTERESTING ,  SO I TAKE IT MUSIC IS A BIG PART OF YOUR LIFE AND WHO YOU ARE THEN ?
I think it can say alot about a person's identity, their culture, etc. Its a good window into someones personality. Plus it makes me feel good to listen to Weekend Nachos while riding

DUDE YOU LIKE WEEKEND NACHOS ! HAHA ME GUS AND OUR BUDDY DYLAN WERE JUST RIDING A SPOT THE OTHER DAY BLASTING THEM . . AND I AGREE FULLY WITH THAT STATEMENT , SO WHAT KIND OF STUFF DID YOU GROW UP LISTENING TO ?
dude i've been jamming nothing but weekend nachos, infest, and roy orbison for the past 2 weeks. I grew up on deftones, glassjaw, poison the well, hopesfall then around end of high school starting enjoying alot of older punk, bjork, pixies, the six part seven, but i've always had a soft spot for power violence and DJ Screw we even had our own freestyle crew in 10th grade "the '05 ballas" still got the jersey softball jeresy that is . .  also i recommend to anyone who likes stoner metal to check out True Widow from Dallas, It's pretty much shoe-gaze + stoner metal

HAHA DUDE THAT IS PRETTY RAD ! AND I DEFINITELY HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR THE PV , SO NOW COME THE SUUUUPER HARD HITTING QUESTIONS . . . . DUMBEST/MOST EMBARRASSING/MOST RANDOM/AND MOST MEMORABLE THINGS THAT HAVE HAPPENED TO YOU ON YOUR BIKE ? GO !
the time I shit my pants while riding.
I was in Denton, Tx on a rode trip and ate to much chinese food then chugged a redbull
instant shart had to ride up massive hills while not sitting down

HAHAHAHA MAN JUST KNOCKED EM ALL OUT WITH ONE STORY ! I LIKE THAT
hahah ya well, when ya gotta go, ya gotta go. bike be damned

OK NEXT HARD HITTING QUESTION . . UR VIEW ON 26 v.s. 700 GO !
I can see why people are going to 26, bigger tires, small circumference is stronger, easier to do grinds. That being said it think its stuff dumb and an mute argument at this point. we all talked about 26's back 2 years ago when we would thrash a pair of deep v's in 2 months. now with mtx33's and chukkers the rims are just as strong and you can run big enough tires to save your rim. The next gen of frames will allow for 60+ clearance anyways. since the strength argument doesnt apply anymore the only thing left to fight over it the aesthetics. it is there i see 26'in as choppy, clunky, and down right style killing there are a few guys who can make it look ok but peg grinds on fixed are slow and clunky looking but when you really get down to it John prolly says it best "it's all about bike control and how well you handle your bike"
thats why guys like Tom, Torey, Congo, Spence, Justin Taylor, and a bunch other i think make 700c look good However, more and more companies are try to push the game to 26' cause it's easier for them to just change their 26' DJ frames to fixed frames (specialized) so who knows maybe someday we wont have an option I'll sum it up with this. 26' looks choppy, pegs grinds look sloppy, and i still ride my brusier everywhere! 700c dont limit me its my commuter and my trick bike

I ENJOY YOUR HONESTY MY FRIEND HAHA
I'm not trying to hate on anyone, if you wanna ride 20' on you fixed go right ahead, i love ed, gus, mike, and all the guys who ride 26' and pegs but its just not my thing

DR. PEPER OR MR. PIBB ?
Dr. pepper and whiskey best combo plus dublin dr. pepper is only found in dublin tx, real cain sugar baby

HAHA FAIR ENOUGH ,  SO EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN TEXAS ? TRUE/FALSE ?
Eh probably. I know everyone wether they try to or not usually proud to be from Texas and will let you know it. It's a legacy of being our own country at one time... p.s. sorry about the whole G.W. Bush thing.

LMFAO . . HEY ITS OK MAN WE APPRECIATE YOU GUYS OWNING UP AND OFFERING AN APOLOGY
Anytime, a Texan is always willing to admit his mistakes. plus i voted for Kerry.

THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A FAR BETTER SITUATION WITH HIM (FLIP-FLOPPER OR NOT)  HAHA , OK SO WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON BIEBER FEVER ?
lollolol I dont really know I've only heard him sing for like 30 seconds. However, given that hair cut the kid is obviously getting alot of pussy. he looks like a future football player on MTV's two-a-days
FYI 20mins left til i gtg

I BEG TO DIFFER ON THE HAIR CUT , I THINK HE LOOKS LIKE A 12yr OLD LESBIAN . . BUT AGREE TO DISAGREE HAHAHA . . .
haha either way he's getting alot of pussy

OK LAST QUESTION THEN . . . . SHOULD FGFS BRING BACK THE GIRLFRIEND SKID ?
lolol, that leads me to the second most embarrassing moment on my bike bruised pubic bone back in the day. socks couldnt shave your bush from the nitto stem so Yes. so the 15yrs old kids in the game can feel the pain Bring back wheelie to leg over skids also and side-saddle skids

HAHAHAHA AMAZING ! SO NOW IS UR SHOUT OUTS/THANKS SECTION
Thanks to GUS , TJ @ fixed cult Drew Triplett @ Milwaukee Bikes Co. Kareem @ loose nuts Justin @ feetbelts @ Phil with Cultur and my friends Ditchman, Peru, Jeff Puckett, and Shea for keeping me riding all kinds of bikes. thanks TJ been fun!
